Mark’s story exemplifies Bigfish’s dedication to leveling up, powered by a genuine care for those he serves.

In 2009, Mark Lacey joined Bigfish Technology as a junior technician. He was looking for a company where he could grow, and his commitment to leveling-up challenged Bigfish to create new opportunities. Over 15 years, he’s developed both his technical and leadership skills to earn more trust and responsibility.

Today, he is Bigfish’s General Manager, responsible for both the Technical and Partner Success teams.

Care-powered growth

That’s a big shift. Where once he was manning the helpdesk and nutting out technical mysteries, he’s now managing key relationships, tracking sales targets and coaching team members. Moving from technical expert to people leadership is not for everyone, but Mark’s natural compassion for others and growth mindset made it a great fit.

Director Chris Polson has been with Mark from the start: “Mark cares deeply about people, and he takes his responsibility very seriously. If there’s a partner who’s hurting, or a team member needing support, Mark won’t rest till it’s resolved.”

The joy of overcoming

A great day for Mark is not problem-free, but one where he overcomes a new challenge. Developing his emotional intelligence alongside his technical expertise, he finds great satisfaction in resolving people-centered challenges – even when emotions run high.

“No one truly likes problems, but I LOVE to solve them!”

It’s a factor that’s often overlooked. When technical challenges threaten the productivity and security of a business, it takes strong EQ to reassure concerned executives and direct a team through systematic problem solving.

Beyond IT

As a husband and father of three, Mark’s drive for solving problems that matter extends beyond the workday. Keen on basketball and AFL, he’s tested his leadership skills volunteering as assistant coach and team manager. Seeing a need, Mark is now starting a charity to help make sports participation more accessible.

“I aim to collect good quality second hand basketball shoes and get them into the hands (or feet) of people in need. More inclusion in sports is great for children and families.”

What’s next?

“I’m pretty excited, yet cautious, about the world changing with AI and automation. Nearly every industry is going to need to adapt, and I am excited to learn more and help to facilitate it.”

Connect with Mark on LinkedIn – he’d love to chat about leadership, sport and your IT challenges.
