Considered Care

Over nearly 75 years, Blackburn Clinic has expanded its community impact while staying true to its core focus: compassion and professionalism.
Emeritus Professor Neil Carson AO founded the Clinic in 1952 from a single home-based clinic room. Today, Blackburn Clinic is a purpose-built, multidisciplinary facility spanning three suites, with 28 independent GPs supported by 46 nursing and administration staff. Its success is underpinned by attentive, relationship-based care, and an environment that supports clinicians to do their best work.
A legacy of thoughtful, unrushed care
Deep patient familiarity, paired with consistency and expertise, is essential to achieving this standard of care. Helen Yaacoub, Development and Project Manager, explains their shared philosophy:
“Quality healthcare cannot be rushed… Continuity of care and long-standing patient–doctor relationships [are] fundamental to achieving better health outcomes.”
And patients experience the difference. As Helen shares, “Patients report feeling genuinely listened to by their GPs and value the compassion, professionalism, and attentiveness demonstrated by the nursing and administrative teams.”
She is also proud of their strong patient loyalty, which Helen says “reflects the trust built through unrushed consultations, strong therapeutic relationships, and a genuine commitment to patient wellbeing.”
The Clinic’s commitment also shows up in their investment in professional development for their staff and the broader medical community, including students and early-career clinicians.
Reliability supports high-quality care
Behind every consultation is an IT environment clinicians depend on. With up to 23 doctors needing simultaneous access, and schedules running at full capacity, reliability matters. It keeps workflows moving and helps clinicians stay focused on patient care.
As a custodian of sensitive data, business continuity planning is critical. Blackburn Clinic takes a measured approach to risk, considering both internal and external factors, like outages and third-party software vendors.
“Cybersecurity is our primary IT risk focus. This includes the risk of ransomware attacks where malicious actors could encrypt or hold critical databases hostage, as well as the risk of data breaches resulting from either external threats or inadvertent human error.”
A dependable IT foundation has helped Blackburn Clinic uplift efficiency and try new tools with confidence.
Thoughtful change management
Over the past decade, Blackburn Clinic’s technology environment has evolved through major system upgrades, security audits and infrastructure expansions. With many users and moving parts, change needs careful planning and rigorous testing.
Helen reflects on her experience during major software transition projects:
“Each transition has been a six-month project led by Alistair Sharp, working closely with me and supported by a highly capable Bigfish team. Given the size and complexity of our organisation, with many users and differing needs, we have particularly valued Bigfish’s commitment to thorough testing and retesting ahead of each migration to minimise risk and disruption.”
The Clinic also values practical guidance when assessing new tools and opportunities. Helen notes that “having Bigfish available to assess the risk profile of new tools provides valuable reassurance and supports responsible adoption.”
Efficiency gains, including early applications of AI, are pursued carefully and only where they support quality care.
Partners in trust and time
With relationships central to the Clinic’s philosophy, its team values principle and commitment in business partnerships. Helen shares that they look for a partner that “thinks through what is ‘right’ for our business and our needs, rather than just offering the option that will give them the greatest profit. Bigfish have demonstrated this for many years.”
“There is a strong sense of mutual trust and shared responsibility.”
Working with Bigfish Technology since 2017, Helen says “the longevity and reliability of the partnership have been a stand-out feature”.
Helen explains, “Regardless of whether a new issue or opportunity is identified by our team or theirs, Bigfish consistently proposes a range of considered solutions, enabling us to select the approach that best fits our needs. There is a strong sense of mutual trust and shared responsibility. Like any long-standing partnership, challenges arise from time to time, but both parties approach them with professionalism, transparency, and a focus on resolution.”
Thoughtful, reliable IT helps healthcare teams stay present for the people they care for.
